As each New Year approaches, I take a day to get away to pray and ask God to put on my heart a Biblical verse that is to be my personal scripture verse of the year. I memorize it, meditate on it, preach on it, and seek to live it out in practice throughout the year.
For the 25+ years I have been doing this, I find that the scripture verse I choose helps me focus on developing spiritual maturity, enhancing my ministry skills and making more effective the missional work I am called to do throughout the year.
Considering my current calling, serving as a coach and consultant to pastors of both new and established churches, I find that the words of Jesus as recorded in the gospel of Luke resonates with me in a special way.
“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine must be stored in new wineskins. But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. ‘The old is just fine,’ they say.” Luke 5:37-39
As this New Year begins, I encourage you to choose your scripture verse of the year of our Lord 2023?
