Your Church Giving Strategy … Probably Isn’t Effective

Your Church Giving Strategy ... Probably Isn't Effective

What’s Up
Too many pastors are in the dark about their church’s finances, and it’s hurting their ministry. You need a viable church giving strategy.

So What
Financial giving is a spiritual discipline. And when pastors don’t know who’s giving what, they’re missing one of the most important discipleship tools they have.

The Point Is

Knowing the Numbers Matters
Last week, I joined a brand new church. Good people. Strong potential. But when the pastor said they didn’t know what anyone gave (“at least not yet”), I cringed. Giving isn’t just about money, it’s about spiritual health. And pastors need to pay attention to both.

Poor Givers Complain Loudest
The folks who argue that pastors shouldn’t know giving records are nearly always the same ones who don’t give. They wrap it in spiritual language or warn about favoritism, but it’s just cover. Integrity isn’t measured by ignorance. A pastor with integrity uses that information for care, not compromise.

Money Tracks the Heart
Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). A drop in giving often reveals a deeper heart issue – or perhaps a serious financial issue. And pastors who are watching the trends can respond with timely pastoral care. Not guilt. Not pressure. Just support, love, and wise leadership.

And … ?

Clif Christopher’s book Not Your Parents’ Offering Plate is required reading for any pastor who wants to lead a sustainable, spiritually healthy church. It helps you navigate the practical side of offerings, generosity, and what to say during giving time on Sunday. But more than that, it reminds us that money isn’t just about the mission … it’s about maturity.

The truth is, most of your people are financially stuck. Buried under credit card debt. Clueless about investment. Never taught the basics of stewardship. And we wonder why generosity is rare. If you want your people to grow spiritually, help them grow financially. Get them out of debt. Teach them how to invest. And yes, show them why generosity matters.
