What’s Up
If your discipleship model doesn’t include evangelism, your discipleship is failing your church.
So What
The church isn’t declining because of bad music or boring sermons. It’s declining because our people can’t explain why Jesus matters … and don’t care to try.
The Point Is
Evangelism is Discipleship
We’ve sanitized discipleship into Bible trivia and therapy groups. Jesus called us to make disciples, not educated club members.
Misunderstanding Evangelism
It’s not about tracts, tents, or theological arguments. It’s living out faith so loud and clear your neighbors have to ask why. Living a “remarkable” life that is truly remarkable, not annoying.
People Aren’t Asking
And that’s on us. No one asks dead fish why they’re floating downstream. But they will notice the ones swimming against the current.
Share the Hope
1 Peter 3:15 assumes you have hope, can explain it, and that someone actually asks. If you can’t check all three boxes, it’s time to get serious. (And it’s that second box where most church members fail … miserably.)
And … ?
Discipleship has gotten soft. Somewhere along the way, it became more about self-help than self-sacrifice. We fill classrooms with people who want to “go deeper,” but we never ask them to wade into the waters of sharing their faith with someone who doesn’t believe. And it shows. Our churches are full of folks who couldn’t articulate their relationship with Jesus if their life depended on it. Worse, many of them wouldn’t risk social discomfort even if it meant someone else’s life did.
We’ve let evangelism get hijacked by awkward scripts and aggressive strangers. But that’s not what biblical evangelism looks like. Real evangelism starts with living a noticeable life. A repentant life. A hopeful life. It continues with relationships, respect, and responsibility. It sounds like “Let me tell you why Jesus matters to me” – not “Let me explain why your beliefs are wrong” or even “Why my beliefs are right.” Until we recover the truth that evangelism is the heartbeat of real disciple-making, we’re just playing church … and the world knows it.
