What’s Up:
We’re not short on good intentions. We’re short on follow-through. Christianity is suffering from a church integrity problem.
So What:
Integrity isn’t about being a scoundrel. It’s about doing what you said you’d do, by when you said you’d do it.
The Point Is:
Integrity Is More Than Niceness
You don’t need to be a low-down rotten scoundrel to lack integrity. If you don’t do what you said you’d do, by when you said you’d do it, you’re not integrous.
Missing Meetings Matters
Board members who don’t show up. Committee members who bail. Worship teams who start late. That’s not inconvenience. That’s hypocrisy your neighbors notice.
Time Tells the Truth
Being late … consistently late … isn’t cute. It’s not “relational.” It’s an integrity issue. Emergencies happen. But if you’re always late, then you’re just always out of integrity.
Fix It When You Blow It
Even the most integrous person will mess up sometimes. When your integrity gets blown, don’t offer a lame apology. Own it. Correct it. And commit that you won’t do it again.
And … ?
Look, we can quibble about the definition of integrity all day long, but the bottom line is this: If the church tells the world we start worship at 10:30, and we actually start at 10:37 because the praise team rolls in late or the tech team is still troubleshooting, then we lied. It doesn’t matter if it’s a little lie or a habitual one, it’s still a breach of trust. When a guest shows up on time, we owe them the dignity of being ready. When a board member agrees to serve, we owe the team the respect of follow-through. This is Christianity 101.
The culture may give lip service to doing your best. Jesus said something else: Let your yes be yes. That wasn’t a suggestion. That was a discipleship directive. A lack of integrity is a discipleship issue, and frankly, if we can’t be trusted with the little things, why would the unchurched trust us with eternal things?
