What’s Up
Ever tried to pray but found your mind bouncing around like a pinball? You’re not alone.
So What
For many, traditional prayer methods feel like an endurance test. Sitting still, closing your eyes, and focusing for more than a minute? Forget about it. But prayer isn’t about perfect posture or silent contemplation … it’s about connection. I’m ADHD and wrote the book on Prayer for People Who Can’t Sit Still (like me!).
The Point Is
Move While You Pray
Walking, pacing, or even rocking can help focus your thoughts. Jesus walked and prayed, and so can you.
Pray with a Pen
Journaling your prayers gives restless minds a productive outlet. Write it down, keep it real, and watch how your focus sharpens.
Speak It Out Loud
If your thoughts scatter when silent, pray aloud. Whisper it, talk to God as if he’s sitting across from you, or pray while driving (eyes open, of course).
Use Breath Prayers
Short, rhythmic prayers tied to breathing can calm the body and engage the mind. Try, “Jesus, give me peace” on the inhale and “I trust You” on the exhale.
And … ?
If you relate to “Distractions R Us,” then listen up. Prayer doesn’t have to be still, stiff, or structured to count. It just needs to be real. If traditional prayer methods don’t work for you, stop forcing it and start adapting. Prayer should never feel like a chore or a test of endurance. It’s a conversation, and just like any relationship, it works best when it fits naturally into your life. Whether you pray while walking, journaling, speaking, or breathing, the key is to pray consistently. Because the power isn’t in the method – it’s in the connection.
