What’s Up: Most churches still run on the assumption that the majority knows best. But a majority rule church isn’t a biblical church.
So What: But the Bible tells a different story. If you’re letting congregational consensus steer the ship, your church may already be off course.
The Point Is:
The Majority Rarely (Biblically Never) Gets It Right
From Genesis to Revelation, show me a time the crowd nailed it. Golden calf. Spying out the land. Crucify him. The majority is almost always wrong.
Membership Isn’t a Privilege
Church members aren’t customers. They’re called to be disciples who die to self, not consumers who vote to protect their comfort zones.
Consensus Compromises the Mission
When every decision is built on keeping the peace, the mission suffers. Compromise is rarely the path of faithfulness or fruitfulness.
The Pastor Is the Leader
A pastor is called, set apart, and accountable to God first. Elders exist to ensure integrity, not to hijack the vision or micromanage the ministry.
And … ?
Democracy might be a decent political system, but it has no place in the Body of Christ. The church was never designed to be a voter-driven, Robert’s-Rules-run institution. It was designed to be a Spirit-led movement, guided by godly leadership and aligned around a mission that matters far more than anyone’s preferences (can you say “Great Commission”?). In Scripture, the only form of governance that ever honored God consistently was a theocracy – and even that worked only when the people trusted their leader to hear from the Lord and act on it.
If we believe the church is here for the lost and not the insiders, then we’d better stop giving the insiders a vote on what reaches the outsiders. Disciples lay down their rights for the sake of the mission. And yet, too many churches are stuck in spiritual quicksand because they keep choosing comfort, tradition, or false unity over courageous obedience. Pastor, lead. Elders, support. Members, follow. That’s not tyranny … that’s biblical.
